Cedar Carvings - Kimberley Francis
The cedar carvings are made from rough cut cedar. Referencing the grain of the cedar as landscape, I carve coastal + backcountry compositions into the wood.
By using a scroll saw and a very small blade, I opt to keep things analog, rather than computerized. This choice allows me the freedom to articulate scale + depth by suspending the composition within the grain lines, as opposed to on top of them.
The pieces may be hung on a wall via the leather strap, or simply placed as an object.
My residential studio is in Roberts Creek, and my work can be found year round at The Grove Front Gallery, in Sechelt.
