Young Artists Exhibition

to April 13, 2024

Artwork Pickup + Reception: Saturday April 13, 2024 NOON – 2PM

We are delighted to support young artists in our community, and proud to continue the annual Young Artists Exhibition, which was initiated in 1988. Entries often include paintings, drawings, mixed-media, and 3-dimensional work. Over the years, we have seen participants in these exhibitions go on to higher education and careers in the arts. All artists receive a small gift encouraging their continued creativity, as well as feedback and encouragement from a panel of working artists on the Coast.

This year we are introducing a new theme to inspire our local youth: The Salish Sea.

What does the Salish Sea mean to you? How do we connect with the sea?

GPAG: Artist Trading Card Workshop

Join us during our Youth Shout Out Exhibition on Wednesday, March 20th 2pm – 3pm at GPAG to learn how to make your own artist trading cards (ATCs) with local ATC artist Nadina Tandy. The workshop is free and pre-registration is not required. Drop in, make, and trade, or bring your ready-made cards in on the day. This workshop/demo is open to all; kids under 12 require parents/supervision please.

Artist Trading Cards (ATC’s) are miniature pieces of art that are traded for free all around the world! There’s only one rule: the size of the card must be 2.5” x 3.5”. Otherwise, anything goes: you can draw, collage, paint on the cards… just make them, sign and date the back, and trade them with other artists.

Please join us for what promises to be a lively discussion!

This event is free and open for all to attend. Preregistration is not required. Enjoy!

Heritage Playhouse: Sadhana: An Evening of Bharatanatyam

This is a rare opportunity to experience the beauty and depth of one of India’s most profound dance forms – Bharatanatyam – presented by one of BC’s leading practitioners of the art, Sujit Vaidya. The performance will be enhanced by the presence of a live ensemble of musicians, featuring Ramya Kapadia (vocal), Raman Kalyan (flute), Curtis Andrews (mridangam) and special guest from India, Vaidya’s guru/teacher A. Lakshmanaswamy performing the role of the nattuvanar (conductor of the ensemble and recitation of rhythmic dance compositions). This eagerly anticipated event promises to transport audiences to the heart of India’s rich artistic heritage through the captivating art form of Bharatanatyam.

Heritage Playhouse: James & Jamesy: Easy as Pie

A pie… A face… How hard can it be?

British Comedy darlings James & Jamesy attempt to conquer this classic of comedy. They fail.

Troubled, determined, and insatiably curious, the two dive into the depths of their psyche, mining memories for clues about what’s holding them back.

Rich in wordplay, comic physicality, and cleverly crafted interactive elements, Easy as Pie is uproarious fun.

Critics’ Pick “A must-see” – Toronto Star

“Easy as Pie is a showcase of the duo’s stunning mastery of physical comedy and their uncanny ability to marry their abilities to the exploration of psychological themes that are at once serious and hilarious. This is simply an amazing show.”
-Stage Door

“Brilliantly staged physical comedy that touches the heart as well as the funny bone.” -Glenn Sumi

Art Exhibition: LINDA SUFFIDY | Strata

Fragile, intelligent and persistent, nature can teach us about survival as we look into deep time in both the past and future. With climate change and the global environmental crisis, Suffidy’s work is an expression of hope, illustrating the resiliency of ancient flora and fauna lineages. Sculptural carved paintings and the drawings derived from them represent these ancient species, which are simultaneously ancient fossils, contemporary objects, and artifacts for the future.

Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, February 17th, 2 pm – 4 pm. All are welcome!

Art Exhibition: EZMINA SAMAROO | Distant Shores New Horizons (oils)

In celebration of Black History Month, Distant Shores New Horizons tells of the artist’s journey from Africa to England to the prairies of Canada, ending with her settling on Canada’s west coast. Told through landscapes and seascapes, Ezmina Samaroo’s exhibition illustrates what it is like to leave behind all that is familiar to arrive at distant shores. The movement of peoples is a complex story, shared by immigrants, refugees and enslaved peoples of the world. Through Samaroo’s lens, it is a story not of despair and fear, but of courage, resolve and determination. An exhibition in Joe’s Lounge.

Re-Wildings is an exhibition of work by Cath Hughes developed in response to issues of climate change, and a questioning as to what this term might mean, both for civilization, and for us as individuals.
