Museums and galleries have played an important role in how cultures and peoples from across the globe have been framed and represented in Western society. Many of the stereotypes that we retain today about other cultures have found their roots in the art and exhibitions of museums and their colonial histories. This three-part discussion will introduce how museums and galleries, and their exhibitions and collections practices are part of the complex framing of other cultures.

New this year, on the first day of the festival we will have a book & art fair in the market, where participants can sell their art and books. We’re also accepting proposals for workshops.

Last year about 4,000 people came through the doors and saw the show, which included the awards ceremony of our SCWES Book Awards for BC Authors!

Indigenous Law and Conversations Across Generations

Sunshine Coast ElderCollege will have its annual ALL AGES event, the Clifford Smith Memorial Lecture, on Sat, Oct 28, 2PM, Chatelech High School. The keynote speaker, Dr. Val Napoleon (UVic), will offer remarks on Indigenous Law and Conversations Across Generations. The event is FREE, but registration is required as seats are limited. Resonances: Presentation/Workshop

Lead Artist: Giorgio Magnanensi

Registration Required, Max 12 participants

In this sound Presentation/Workshop, Giorgio Magnanensi will showcase the potential of using resonating objects and various materials to craft audio resonators. These resonators find their applications in playful sound explorations, performances, and multichannel audio diffusion. Giorgio will further provide demonstrations of his personally crafted wooden resonators, which are created using reclaimed driftwood and discarded slabs sourced from mill operations on the Coast. Participants will have the chance to experience the distinctive qualities of these resonators firsthand, as they diffuse sound energy in all directions, creating an immersive and tangible sonic experience.

Our World Oceans Day festival is back for 2023!

Join us for our second LIVE film screening this week. Tonight’s feature film is Uncharted Waters.

Four young people with diverse connections to Howe Sound/ Átl‘ka7tsem confront an uncertain future. United by an innovative, community-led mapping project, can they work together to protect their home?

We will also be joined by guest speakers from the Squamish Nation, Marine Stewardship Initiative, Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society, and Marine Life Sanctuaries Society.
